One mission, many programs

Wage Policy & ResearchThrough Wage Policy & Research, we support workers in west Michigan as they fight for economic justice. We are able to partner with worker organizations, policy experts and community groups to study income and employment trends, so that Labor may more effectively advocate for public and workplace policies which promote middle class growth.
Grassroots GrowthOver the past half century, we’ve built some pretty powerful labor institutions, but unless we get back to growing our labor movement, those institutions won’t be around for future generations. The Grassroots Growth program supports a number of community-labor initiatives including: 1) partnerships with community organizations that share the mission of fighting for a strong and vibrant middle class.; 2) maintaining a clean and modern meeting space where the west Michigan labor community can gather; 3) a west Michigan labor caucus program, which is working to expand labor’s tent to include those whose voices aren’t always heard in the labor movement

Labor Education & TrainingWorking men and women cannot effectively fight for economic and social justice unless they’re given the tools to win– in the fields of organizing, communications, law, representation, bargaining and lobbying. Teaching labor history to the next generation of workers is also critical. The Labor Education & Training program provides the resources necessary for us, in conjunction with the Kent-Ionia Labor Council, to offer quality training and educational opportunities in west Michigan, including lunch-and-learns, webinars, classes and vocational assistance.
Community ServiceFar too often working families need a little help making ends meet, and the west Michigan labor community is there and ready to offer assistance. Every month dozens of KICLC Community Action Team volunteers distribute food from a Feeding America mobile food pantry so that Grand Rapids-area families that are going through a time of food insecurity can have a few extra groceries in their kitchens. This program covers the cost of the the monthly food truck; this program also provides resources to other local organizations that offer food, clothing and shelter to those in need.
